Kohola

kohola_by_mara_branco.jpg

This painting depicts the return of the graceful "Kohola" to Hawaii, where they have the first breach as a calve.

"Kohola" is the Hawaiian word for the humpback whale. The ancient Hawaiians respected these whales as a family god.

Humpback whales travel from Alaska to Hawaiian waters, where they stay during the winter to breed and nurse their calves.

Hawaii is the best place in the world to see this unique creature and enjoy the spectacular splash after every breach. The words to describe these moments are always ... woooow.

The waters between the islands of Maui and Lanai are particularly spectacular to see the whales during the wintertime.
