Animal Collage

This project was a big hit with the kids in the Kalamaiki art class! The most difficult part? Deciding which animals to create—so many fun options! 😊 I brought in two collage examples to inspire them: a Cat and an Owl. While showing these, I introduced the class to basic collage techniques and shared how versatile this art form can be.

We used old magazines as our material. The first step was sorting magazine pages by color, which helped the kids plan their animal’s primary color theme. Once they chose their colors, they began tearing and gluing pieces onto their paper to form the background of their animal.
Next came the features—eyes and noses were drawn separately on plain paper, then painted and added to the collage. To finish it off, the kids added details like mouths, whiskers, and shading to bring their creatures to life. The results were imaginative and full of personality!
