ʻĀkepa

This painting depicts an ʻĀkepa male that has bright orange feathers in contrast with the female ʻĀkepa that has greenish and yellow feathers.

ʻĀkepa is a small Hawaiian honeycreeper, and like many other honeycreepers, it is listed as an endangered species.

The ʻĀkepa is a unique bird of Hawaii that can be found on Maui and the Big Island in ʻōhia forests. Their primary diet consists of insects, and they drink nectar from different flowers, including the Naio flower, represented in this painting.
