The Big Island of Hawaiʻi is distinguished by its active volcanoes, with Kīlauea being a notable example. The “Kīlauea” painting pays homage to the unexpected eruption of May 2018, which dramatically altered the island’s landscape and profoundly affected many families. Kīlauea was the world’s longest continuously erupting volcano until its lava flows ceased in the fall of 2018.

The Ōhiʻa lehua (flowering evergreen tree) represents life amid the devastation. As the official flower of the Big Island, the lehua is endemic to Hawaiʻi and thrives on rugged lava rock, growing into either tall trees or small shrubs. Protecting this unique species is essential for its survival and the survival of the many other species that rely on it for their ecosystem.
