Palila

9/16/2020

The Palila is one of the largest and most striking Hawaiian honeycreepers, known for its vibrant yellow plumage and melodic call. Sadly, like many native Hawaiian birds, the Palila is critically endangered. It now survives only on the upper slopes of Mauna Kea, on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, where it relies almost entirely on the seeds of the native Māmane tree for food.

This painting is my tribute to the Palila — a rare and beautiful symbol of Hawaiʻi’s natural heritage. While seeing this species on the brink of extinction is heartbreaking, I hope this artwork helps bring more attention to the importance of protecting these unique birds and the fragile ecosystems they call home.
