Inspired by a fantastic suggestion from a Facebook post, I recently painted the Pueo, an endemic Hawaiian bird. Known as the short-eared owl, the pueo holds a special place in Hawaii's ecosystem but is also part of the endangered species list, especially on the island of Oʻahu. Unlike most nocturnal owls, the Pueo is active during the day, making it a unique sight to behold. However, their behavior can lead to tragic encounters with vehicles, as they sometimes chase after car headlights, which can result in fatal accidents. Therefore, driving safely and remaining vigilant is crucial if you spot this magnificent bird crossing the road. Let’s protect the pueo and ensure future generations can appreciate its beauty!
